In the United States, 10.1% of the workforce is currently self-employed as of January 2023. That’s almost 16.2 million people. This figure includes both incorporated (6.56 million) and unincorporated (9.635 million) businesses. Most of those who are self-employed work in management, business, science, and arts occupations (40.8%). 19.8% work in service occupations, 17.3% work in sales and office occupations, 14.7% work in natural resources, construction, and maintenance occupations, and 7.4% work in production, transportation, and material moving occupations.
